EMERGENCY services were called to a farm near the Bluestone Wales National Park resort this lunchtime, after a light aircraft undertook an emergency landing in a field.

Firefighters from Narberth and Haverfordwest were called to the scene of the incident, at Broomhill Farm, Minwear Woods, shortly before noon today, January 9.

The Haverfordwest Airport-based FlyWales flying school aircraft had made the controlled landing as a precaution after encountering engine difficulties, with pilot-instructor Dan Hughes making the manoeuvre.

No damage was caused to the plane, and both the pilot and passenger were uninjured.

Western Telegraph:

County Councillor Di Clements, who owns Broomhill Farm, said the first she was aware of the incident was seeing the emergency services turn up.

“There were quite a lot of emergency services vehicles,” she said. “I saw the emergency vehicles before I saw the plane, I was thinking ‘what is going on?’”

Western Telegraph:

Cllr Clements praised the skill of the pilot for safely landing the plane.

“There were four young stock in there, but it didn’t affect them,” she said.

“I take my hat off to the pilot for landing safely. The plane is in good order, he did a good job to land it as well as he did and keep everyone safe.”

Western Telegraph:

Firefighters left the scene shortly after 12.30pm.

It is understood at least four to five fire service vehicles attended.

A witness said it was thought the plane had suffered engine failure and was forced to land.

He added: "It was lucky the field was dry, because if it had been boggy it could have been a very different outcome."

FlyWales Head of Training Gwyndaf Williams said: “The instructor decided to make a precautionary landing because the engine was running a bit rough; rather than risk flying back to the airfield with the possibility of the engine cutting out it if it was more serious, we elected to land there.

“He landed in a nice big field, landing perfectly okay.”

Gwyndaf said the ad-hoc landing was little different to a regular landing at Withybush.
