Driving home from the pub proved a costly mistake for a Fishguard man.

Timothy John Bowles, of Hottipass Street, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit when he appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday, March 19.

Vaughan Pritchard-Jones, prosecuting, said police stopped Bowels’ Mitsubishi at Plas y Fron, Fishguard, because of a defective light on March 1, and could smell alcohol on his breath when they spoke to him.

He added that there was no allegation of bad driving.

Bowels was found to have 52mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit is 35mg.

The court heard that Bowels, 63, had a previous conviction for a similar offence.

Mark Layton, defending, said: “Mr Bowles had been to a public house. Clearly he should not have drunk as much as he did. He was stopped and cooperated.”

Magistrates banned Bowles from driving for 40 months and fined him £120.

He was ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £30 surcharge.

The chairman of the bench said: “This was obviously a very silly thing to do.”

“Your son will be giving you a lot of taxi rides over the next 40 months.”
