PICKING up a coffee and a sandwich alongside brochures and guidebooks could soon be on the menu at Tenby’s Tourist Information Centre.

The centre, originally under threat of closure by its owners, Pembrokeshire County Council, has been given a stay of execution to see if it can be made cost-effective.

The authority has now drawn up plans to re-vamp the building, in Lower Park Road, to incorporate a new coffee and snack bar, with seating inside and out.

Said a county council spokesman: “The intention is to provide light refreshments for visitors exploring the town, including hot and cold beverages, sandwiches and a selection of cakes.

“If the plans are approved, the snack bar will be launched at the end of May, ready for the summer holiday season. Refreshments would be served daily between 10am and 4pm.”

The planned development follows a recommendation from the council’s cabinet in March, which stated that the centre might have to close after the summer unless a permanent solution can be found to improve revenue and cut costs.

The cabinet’s recommendation followed a request from Tenby Town Council for more time to consider how they could support the TIC.

In order for preparatory work to be carried out to install facilities on site, Tenby TIC is to close temporarily on Wednesday May 1 and Thursday May 2, with a possible extension into Friday May 3.

On Saturday, May 4, the centre will commence temporary opening hours of 10am–1pm and 1.45pm–4pm from Monday to Saturday.

The council spokesman added: “We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused as a result of changes taking place and thank them for their continued support for this facility.”
