Coastguards and paramedics rescued two women yesterday (Sunday) both who had fallen while walking.

On Newgale rescuers battled against the incoming tide as they as they came to the aid of a lone dog walker who had fallen on the far side of the beach.

The 51-year-old woman had fallen on the rocks and injured her ankle. A local family called the emergency services, waiting with the woman until coastguards from St Davids and Broad Haven, as well as paramedics, arrived on the scene.

A rescue helicopter was put on standby, as the tide was coming in quickly threatening to cut off both the casualty and her rescuers.

The woman was transferred onto a stretcher. Rescue teams negotiated slippery rocks and the incoming tide to convey her to an ambulance waiting in the Pebbles car park.

The woman was taken to Withybush hospital with a suspected broken ankle.

In a separate incident coastguards were called to the aid of a local woman who fell on rocks between Coppet Hall and Wiseman's Bridge shortly before 2.30pm yesterday.

Tenby lifeboat was also paged to attend the incident but was stood down when coastguards realised that the incoming tide did not pose a risk to the rescue of the casualty.

The 37-year-old had fallen and injured her right wrist and right cheek. She was carried by coastguards from Tenby and Manorbier, as well as the south Pembrokeshire sector manager, to an awaiting ambulance.

The casualty was then taken to Withybush hospital.
