A unique Pembrokeshire house built out of straw has been selected for Channel Four's Grand Designs finals tonight.

Rachel Shiamh's straw bale house Penwhilwr, in St Dogmaels, has been shortlisted for the eco-build category, which will go to public vote during a live programme tomorrow night.

Rachel said: "It's very surreal at the moment. I'm starting to enjoy it, but it was a bit overwhelming at first.

"I'm trying to stay grounded and remember the simple message that I have to offer.

"It will be nice to meet the owners of the other houses and share experiences."

Many of Rachel's friends and family do not own televisions, but people will be able to watch the programme at the Ferry Inn, St Dogmaels, and vote using their mobile phones.

The construction of the house, using local and natural materials, brought people of the community together, and the project attracted interest from all over the world.

More than 200 dedicated volunteers and workers helped complete the low-impact house.

Rachel's home embodies all the principles of a low carbon, sustainable build.

It is powered entirely by the sun and the wind with a rainwater harvesting system, and serves as an example for living lightly and sustainably.

The house was created out of 350 straw bales and took four years to complete.

It is the only one of its kind in Pembrokeshire, and there are only two load-bearing straw houses with more than one floor in the UK.

Penwhilwr will be featured on Grand Designs, on Channel Four from 9pm to 10pm tonight (Thursday).

The same programme will be shown on S4C at 10.30pm.

The winner will be announced at the end of the programme, and will be entered into Friday's grand final to decide an overall winner.
