A Haverfordwest business is helping young people gain workplace experience and build a foundation for future careers.
The Specsavers store in Haverfordwest is offering Saturday jobs to young people, including 16-year-old Kyle Ashborne, who has been working weekends as a trainee optical assistant since November while studying at college.
Kyle said: "Working at Specsavers alongside my studies has been a great experience.
"I have developed my confidence and communication skills and learnt so much about customer care and the optical industry.
"The flexibility and weekend work really helps me balance my job with college, and I feel supported to develop my skills for the future."
His role includes greeting customers, supporting staff with appointments, and learning about the technology and processes involved in eye examinations.
For many young people, weekend positions like this offer a valuable first experience in the workplace.
Andy Britton, store director at Specsavers Haverfordwest, said: "A Saturday position is an ideal way to gain an early insight into the profession, while picking up valuable, real-world experience in a supportive workplace.
"It’s not just about earning extra money – it’s about giving young people the chance to build confidence, learn how to work as part of a team and develop strong communication and customer service skills that will serve them well in the future.
"Many of our colleagues began in weekend roles and have since gone on to enjoy long and rewarding careers with us, which we’re incredibly proud to support."
The Haverfordwest store’s approach comes at a time when almost one in eight people aged 16-24 are not in education, employment, or training.
The decline of traditional Saturday jobs has been cited as a factor in why some young people feel unprepared for the workforce.
Specsavers said it is committed to changing that by providing practical opportunities for young people to get started.
The company offers a range of career paths, from retail and customer service to clinical roles in optics, and supports ongoing training and development.
The store encourages more young people to consider weekend roles as a stepping stone into the world of work and future career growth.
