A weekend of living history marking the Last Invasion of Britain will take place in Pembrokeshire this weekend, complete mounted cavalry, military camps, skirmish and surrender.

The events, which are open to all, will take place in Fishguard and Goodwick and feature live re-enactments telling the story of the 1797 French landing on the north Pembrokeshire coast.

Adrian Tyrrell, an organiser for the event, said: "The weather is set fair, so come and enjoy a celebration of the unique part Wales played in the UK's history."

In Goodwick, Phoenix Park will host a re-enactors’ camp from 10am to 1pm on both days, offering visitors a chance to explore period uniforms, weapons and daily camp life.

A horse display and camp lunch will follow from 1pm to 2.30pm, with forces assembling at 2.45pm ahead of a staged skirmish at 3pm and the French surrender at 3.30pm.

The commemoration then continues in Fishguard, where Market Square will stage the ceremonial signing of the treaty at the Royal Oak at 4.15pm.

From 5pm, the Fishguard Male Voice Choir and Goodwick Brass Band will provide musical entertainment to close the day’s events.

Organisers recommend the Phoenix Park camp as particularly suitable for younger people, while the horse display from 1pm to 2pm is suitable for people of all ages.

However, they advise that the battle scene will feature loud bangs and may not be suitable for nervous dogs.

The weekend is being promoted by North Pembrokeshire Trade & Tourism Limited, with the aim of celebrating local heritage while giving residents and holidaymakers a vivid, family friendly introduction to one of Pembrokeshire’s most famous historical episodes.
