Dear Editor — Regarding the article “Social housing need swings vote despite protest” (Western Telegraph, September 24th) where I was speaking as the county councillor, not guest speaker.
Having supported outline development on the two sites, I felt that for National Park planning officers to recommend approval of the proposal for six flats on the Hounsel Avenue site, with no private garden space was incredible.
I firmly believe the old rural district councils would never have allowed any residence to be built without a garden area.
Cllr Robert Lewis suggested there is a need for affordable housing but ‘we don’t let it happen’. As the local councillor born and bred in Pembrokeshire I resent that comment as I have fought hard to secure any reasonable development proposals in my council ward.
All I was asking for was to reduce the number of dwellings on this particular small site.
The report also stated that I objected on the grounds of lack of disabled facilities when in fact I suggested that at least one of the properties should be a purpose-built property as there is no such building on the Skrinkle estate at present.
I also suggested that the developer contribute to a scheme, which would prevent service buses stopping close to the corner.
Cllr Malcolm Calver Gleann-na-Coille, Pembroke Road, Manorbier.
