Female workers had the time of their lives inflicting pain on their male colleagues at Chevron yesterday- all in the name of charity, of course.

Burly workers and contractors at the Pembroke oil refinery got in touch with their feminine side when they lined up to get various body parts waxed and shaved by beautician Sue Harrop for Children In Need.

The Refinery Scissorhands charity event, which took place at a makeshift salon at the refinery, was the brainchild of Maintenance Scheduler Nicola Green and Payroll worker Heidi Morgan.

Instrument Technician Gary Gwyther bravely volunteered to have his armpits waxed along with Mechanical Asset Technician Royston Workman.

“Nicola roped us into it,” said Gary.

“I ended up having my legs done as well. We are still collecting sponsorship at the moment.”.

Amec Fitter Tony Raymond bared his chest to the girls, who proceeded to de-fuzz the area, and Mechanical Co-ordinator Kevin James raised £45 for Children In Need by having his eyebrows waxed.

When asked how painful the procedure was, a blotchy Kevin told the Western Telegraph: "Well it's stopped bleeding now anyway!"

Some men went under the razor, including Jason Rowley, who later emerged sporting a cutting edge mohican and was said to be feeling the chill.

Nicola said: "Gary was being a bit of a baby when he had his armpits done, and another guy who had his back done.

"Sue from The Lavender Tree in Milford Haven donated all the equipment for for the day and we've had about 25 people in already.

"The workers have already raised £1,100 in donations and that's not including the sponsorship money from this event."

Public Affairs Adviser for Chevron, Phil Thompson, said: "Aside from the charity contributions we make as a company, the site in general is so generous.

"In the last two months alone the workers have raised £4,400 for Pink Day, £1,400 for Wales Air Ambulance and over £800 in the Macmillan Coffee Morning."

He added: "The company is pleased to support the workers in their efforts."
