A FIVE-year-old's fascination with Fireman Sam prevented a serious blaze from breaking out at his grandmother's home.

Quick-thinking Iwan Llewellyn, from Llandissilio, knew exactly what to do when a chip pan started smouldering after watching the BBC and S4C series, Fireman Sam.

His mother, Anne-Marie, said: "When the chip pan began melting Iwan smelled plastic and took it upon himself to telephone the fire brigade, saying there is an emergency, we need the fire service.

"He loves watching Fireman Sam. He knows it in Welsh and English and he knows all the songs. He is also really into fire engines and fire rescue in a big way and plays on his play telephone. I didn't think he would know the number to call, but he knew exactly what he was pressing," she added.

Firefighters from Narberth and Crymych responded to the 999 call on June 11th, and were astonished to discover, when they arrived at Laburnam Cottages, that it was little Iwan, who made the emergency call.

"This is an excellent example of an intelligent young lad with a good awareness of fire safety in the home," explained Harry Webber, County Commander for Pembrokeshire.

"Iwan's actions certainly prevented a serious incident from developing. We are very proud of Iwan, he is a credit to his family."

Fireman Sam, which is popular across the world and has been translated into over 25 languages, is used by UK Fire Brigades to deliver a safety message to children.
