Of all the bands in west Wales who have possessed the necessary talent to make it, top of the list has to be Milford Haven's Jylt.

They were hugely popular, hotly tipped and had a record contract firmly under their belts. At the centre of the band was founder member, bassist, vocalist and song writer Nia George, who fell ill with leukaemia while recording their first release and, after a long battle with her illness, died on February 21st, 2004, aged 21.

Nia was well known on the Pembrokeshire music scene and her zest for life, her wit and sense of humour will never be forgotten by the many musicians with whom she toured.

Tom Cole, of Love Rocket said: "Nia was great company, always smiling and laughing. She was also a fantastic singer. Her bass playing and song writing skills were inspirational." Nia is sadly missed by everyone whose lives she touched. Fellow Jylt member, Alex, remembers that 'there was no one like her, she was our best friend'. Sadly, very little of Jylt's vast output was ever released, but recently Nia's father, Bernie George, discovered recordings that Nia had made in her bedroom and, deciding that they were too good to gather dust, enlisted the help of ex-Jylt members Alex, Sarah and Tim, to create a charity CD, Messages.

This is a 16-track compilation of both Nia's new found work and Jylt songs. Messages is packed with intoxicatingly melodic songs and you can't help but be touched by their magic. The luminescence of Nia's distinctive voice remains undiminished and her own compositions are unshowy yet lovely. It is also wonderful to have the opportunity to revisit some of the songs that made Jylt so special.

The charity that will gain from the sale of this CD is the Bucketful Of Hope Appeal. Messages costs £8 and is available from many outlets in the county or can be ordered from the website niageorge.com. But the worth of this CD goes much deeper than its fundraising potential. It is a way for us to remember a very talented person and above all it is, in the words of Nia's father Bernie, 'a celebration of exciting and happier times'.
