CAREW 0 ST ISHMAELS 2 ADAM Davies created history for St Ishmaels, scoring twice against Carew, in front of a good crowd at Monkton Lane, which deservedly handed them the Senior Cup for the very first time.

Tish have cruelly lost in four previous finals, but on Saturday, they finally broke their duck and deservedly won the elusive silverware.

On the county's biggest soccer stage, 21-year-old Davies proved just why he is one of the deadlist finishers in the top flight.

Just 14 minutes before the interval Tish broke the deadlock. A poor place kick by Carew keeper Ian Kerrison fell straight to Marc Devonald who brilliantly marshalled central midfield.

His pinpoint through ball fell straight to the silky feet of Davies, he coolly controlled and tucked the ball neatly underneath the advancing body of Kerrison.

The ball came off the foot of the post, but Davies reacted quickest to thump the rebound home despite a deflection off the foot of defender Hadyn Shapcott. In the 61st minute came the goal which, in effect, killed off poor old Carew's cup-winning hopes.

It surely has to be one of the best goals ever witnessed in a Senior Cup final. Again Devonald was the instigator. His inch perfect through ball did the damage and allowed Davies to show off his blistering pace from the half-way line.

Carew central defender Daryl John tried desperately to cling onto Davies, but once the confident young striker broke his firm shackles he was away.

With only Kerrison to beat Davies showed all his predatory skills to round him and gleefully stick the ball into the back of the empty net, much to the delight of the vociferous Tish following.

However, it wasn't Tish who had the better of the opening exchanges. They looked rather nervous.

On the five minute mark Tish keeper Jon Pawlett pulled off a good save, quickly diving down low to his right to deny Carl Wainwright's deflected snap-shot. Pawlett made a terrible howler in the eighth minute which really should have been punished.

Team-mate Martin Pawlett's back-pass saw him badly scuff his clearance. It fell straight to Carew hot-shot James Buckle on the edge of the 18-yard area, but his rather hurried shot struck the keeper. With a little more composure he could have found the target.

Tish began to settle and Kerrison pulled off two fine saves to deny Devonald and Davies from opening the scoring.

Davies' co-striker Harteveld also lofted a 20 yarder over the crossbar. But this relentless Tish pressure told in the 31st minute as Davies found the target at the second time of asking to gave his team a slender one goal cushion going in at half-time

Shortly after the turnaround Harteveld spurned a golden opportunity from six yards which should have extended Tish's advantage.

Carew tried everything to get back into it, but they just couldn't break through a solid looking Tish back-four inspirationally led by veteran central defender and skipper Robbie Thomas who was quite outstanding.

Four minutes from normal time and Marc Devonald fired inches wide. And Carew were cruelly denied a goal right on the stroke of full time.

Substitute Ian Sefton played a neat one-two before unleashing a terrific pile-driving 20-yarder which Pawlett brilliantly tipped over the bar.

In the after match ceremony Pembrokeshire League council chairman Roger Wood, thanked both teams for a fitting final and he also thanked everyone connected with Monkton Swifts AFC for providing their excellent facilities.

Roger handed both teams their medals and then presented proud Tish skipper Robbie Thomas with the Senior Cup. And then the celebrations with jubilant Tish followers could really get into full swing.
