DEAR EDITOR, - I would like to draw your attention to comments made by Cllr Brian Hall on Radio Pembrokeshire on October 11th.

He was speaking in his capacity as deputy chairman of the Mid and West Wales Fire Authority, defending its plans to cut firefighters' jobs at Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock fire stations.

To end his argument, he stated that Swansea had stations doing more calls with fewer firefighters and do 'a better job, probably'.

For the deputy chairman of the Fire Authority to publicly question the professionalism, ability and commitment of our local firefighters and make a comparison with our own colleagues is deplorable.

All firefighters are trained to the same standard and to suggest that we do a lesser job because we attend fewer calls than a city station shows a lack of understanding that should not be present at this level.

A comparison based on figures is not relevant in any case, because the issue here is the number of firefighters available to protect the local risks.

The integrated risk management plan the Brigade is proposing takes no account of the local risk that will now increase significantly with the new LNG plants that are to be built.

The plan is to cut 42% of the full-time firefighters before the arrival of LNG and the unanswered questions on safety.

The public should be warned of these proposals.
