A PROPOSED extension to a wind farm at Pendine may lead to the project trebling in size within two years.

Nuon Renewables, the company behind Parc Cynog wind farm, is hoping to add as many as ten new turbines to the existing five.

Tristan Mackie, community liaison representative for Nuon Renewables said: "Over its 25 year life the extension to the project will, on an annual basis, produce energy equivalent to the annual consumption of 3,600 houses.

"It will also displace 15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum."

The company says it cannot confirm the exact extent of the new project until consulting the relevant organisations and gauging public opinion at an exhibition to be held in the autumn.

Baseline studies undertaken by Nuon formed the basis of the scoping document submitted to Carmarthen County Council in April.

Feedback from the council on environmental and ecological issues, together with the results from other studies, will influence the design of the extension.

The increasing importance the National Assembly places on renewable energy was highlighted in June when it released a draft planning policy statement and technical advice note encouraging local authorities to embrace sources of green energy.
