BYRON Grey, aged four, of Little Haven, will never forget his latest fishing trip with his mum and dad, Andy and Vivienne Grey, and older brother Owen, 12.

Byron was knocked over by a metre-long sunfish which suddenly leaped out of the water into their 14-foot boat, while they were lobster fishing in St Bride's Bay.

They had seen the sunfish alongside, and, although the large, round fish is a tropical creature, it was not an unfamiliar sight.

Andy, a former crew member and now operations manager of the Broad and Little Haven inshore lifeboat, had seen them in the bay before. He estimated the weight of the fish at around four stone, but he managed to throw it overboard.

Said Vivienne, a member of the ILB crew: "The sunfish sort of frisbee'd out of the water and into the boat on top of Byron. It really scared him, but he has been out since and is okay. Fortunately, he had a wet suit on, which was covered in scales and slime, but he had cuts and grazes to his face and hands."

Sunfish, which can grow up to three metres in length and weigh around 3,000 lbs, love jellyfish, of which there has been an abundance in Pembrokeshire waters this summer.

Andy, recently retired headteacher of Hakin CP School, said he was glad the family was with him or no-one would have believed his big fish story!
