As Haverfordwest celebrates its 900th year, the town’s new mayor was sworn in last week at a ceremony at St Mary’s Church, watched by invited dignitaries, school children and residents.

Cllr Chris Blakemore will serve the town for the next year, ably assisted by deputy mayor Cllr Ellen Repton and town sheriff, Cllr Charles Davies.

At the 532nd mayoral lunch, former Navy officer and fireman, Cllr Blakemore praised outgoing mayor, Cllr James Campbell for his hard work in office and over the many years he has been involved with the town council.

Cllr Blakemore, who is a governor at Portfield Special School, added: “I follow a long line of illustrious mayors and I pray that I can continue the traditions of this prestigious office.

“In recent weeks I have taken the opportunity to walk about the town with the soul intention of seeking improvements. I have not been disappointed. There can be little doubt that the town has improved dramatically over the last few years.”

The new deputy mayor, Cllr Ellen Repton, joined the town council two years ago and is proud to represent her home town.

“It’s a daunting thought but I’m really looking forward to it very much. It is a privilege to represent my home town,” said Cllr Repton.

Once again, Cllr Charles Davies, well known for his work with the town museum and charity work, has been bestowed the title of Town Sheriff.

Cllr Davies ran through just some of the benefits the town council gives to the town adding: “The council promotes the town and helps to make this town a town with a generous community sprit. A town in which all its citizens can take pride in.”

The mayor’s chaplain is Rev Paul Mackness of St Thomas’ Church. A civic ceremony will be held at 11am on June 27th.
