A nursing home worker took her friend’s car while over the drink-driving limit and crashed into an electricity pylon, Haverfordwest magistrates were told last week.

Amelia Margaret Davies, of Hillcroft, Johnston, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, driving while over the drink-driving limit and without a licence or insurance on July 10th.

The court heard that the 21-year-old Johnston Nursing Home care assistant crashed the stolen Vauxhall Zafira into a pylon at the village.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan said that, at the time, she had 84 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Miss Morgan said that Davies took the keys to the car during a party at a friend’s house, and was later spotted walking along the highway towards Haverfordwest by police.

She added that Davies, who is a provisional licence holder, was ‘devastated’ by her actions.

Mark Layton, defending, said that Davies was ‘remorseful’ for the breach of trust and the inconvenience she caused to her friend, who has been left without a car.

Julie Norman, who carried out a probation report, said Davies had previously been involved in an abusive relationship, and was still suffering.

She said: “She started drinking, going out and socialising with friends who were involved with drinking too much.

“She is not someone who is alcohol dependant, but drank alcohol as a result of what she’s gone through.

“This has been a large wake up call for her.”

Davies was given a 12- month community order with supervision and 100 hours unpaid work.

She was also disqualified from driving for 20 months and 12 months, to run concurrently, and received nine points on her licence.

Magistrates also ordered her to pay £85 costs.
