A beach clean at Whitesands picked up a satisfyingly small amount of rubbish when volunteers spent a day scouring the sand for waste.
Run by Surfers Against Sewage west Wales regional representatives Lou and Jon Haylock, the beach clean on Sunday, September 8 saw 26 volunteers collect 27kgs of rubbish.
“As you will see we didn’t find large amounts of litter at Whitesands and this is great news as will be an indication of how well the local community, visitors and the local council look after their beach. “However, to put it into context on a Welsh and national scale, 91 volunteers helped us remove almost 450kgs at the other two Welsh beaches, Llantwit Major and Hells Mouth, so the overall problem is there for all to see,” said SAS’s Dom Ferris.
During the clean up a group of surfers on the beach spotted what they thought was a jellyfish but was in fact an old helium party balloon, highlighting the problem that marine life such as turtles face when mistaking marine litter for food, added Dom.
