AN intrepid cyclist is taking in the sights of Scotland to raise money for Shalom House in St Davids.

Nina Russell, 29, set off from Alnmouth on Saturday, May 10, and will pass through Fort William, Inverness, Perth, and St Andrews before finishing in Edinburgh on Saturday, May 24.

She is joined by her friend Emma Higgs on the 552 mile trip.

Shalom is a cause that is very close to Nina’s heart, as her grandfather John Bell spent a week in respite care there in February last year.

Nina, who lives in a small hamlet in the south of France, said: “My Grandparents have lived in Roch all my life, and it’s an area I adore. It’s a peaceful get away from reality and work life.

“When my family was going through my grandfather’s illness, Shalom was outstanding. The staff were so personal and compassionate that you felt you could call them day or night for support.

“I recently heard that because of funding issues Shalom can now only offer day care, and not overnight stays. This immediately struck me as such a waste of truly kind, caring people and a beautiful facility which can make the last months of someone’s life peaceful and as relaxed as possible.”

Nina added: “Emma and I both enjoy cycling, and we first planned this trip as a way to see Scotland. But as the ride got closer, people asked about sponsoring me, and I realised that it is quite a challenge, and was worthy to do for charity.”

Nina is well on her way to achieving her fundraising target of £500. To donate to her cause visit www.justgiving.com/nina-russell3
