Jonny Sutton is no stranger volunteering with junior sport in Pembrokeshire - but now he is appealing for help as he prepares to work with youngsters in a totally different environment.

On August 17th, the 40-year-old from Neyland, who is heavily involved with the town's junior football sides amongst other sports, will leave home in preparation for a 12 week volunteering spell at the ROKO 20 Academy in Murang’a, Kenya.

There he will help with teaching sport, assisting with Maths and English, and as he puts it "anything else that I can do."

The school, set up by former Neyland resident Tracey Neale, tutors 85 orphaned children aged from 4 to 14, and heavily relies on volunteers and sponsors in order to survive.

“These children have nothing," Jonny told Telegraph Sport.

"I know that I am in for a culture shock and I will see extreme poverty but I am hoping to bring a little sunshine and fun into the lives of the youngsters.

"I will spend 12 weeks helping them to learn and will try and teach them as much as I can. But I am sure the trip will teach me as many new things as it will the children!”

Recently Jonny undertook the arduous 53.4 mile Race to The King Trek in order to raise funds to allow him to purchase and ship equipment to the school - which is approximately an hour from the capital City of Nairobi.

He has already set up an appeal on his Facebook page for youngsters in the county to send second hand replica shirts - and he now needs additional help in collecting equipment and clothing which the school desperately needs.

He is also asking for assistance, whether it be financially or just via contacts, to help him to get the equipment out to Kenya.

“The appeal for football shirts was an idea I had for which I wanted to be able to give every child a replica shirt of a major footballing team.

"It went viral. I’m very fortunate in that my son Tyler has played football all over the country and has former team mates in Cardiff, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen and Swansea – many of whom have sent or are sending shirts. The power of Facebook has meant that people from all over Wales have been offering kit."

The problem Johnny now faces is getting these shirts and other items out to Kenya as there is only so much he can carry in his suitcase.

"Ideally I want to be able to take a set of SAMBA portable goals with me as these will be a huge asset to the school." he added.

The list of clothing and equipment that is needed is as follows:

School uniform: grey socks, grey shorts, grey sweatshirt and jumpers.

School equipment: Flashcards or books which encourage literacy or ABC, pens, pencils, paper, white board pens, pencil sharpeners, erasers, rulers, clocks for teaching, toy cars and animals, simple, small calculators, staplers.

Sports equipment: footballs (flat), rugby balls (flat).
