ONE of the hardest things to do in sport is to achieve a hole in one in golf. It's even rarer for two to be made on the same day, but two on the same round?
When members Wyn Griffiths and Jim Penfold stepped onto the tee of the 164yard par 3 16th in the same four-ball, scenes of delirium and shock would have swept over the group as both players holed their shots.
This extraordinary event occurred at Newport Links Golf Club on Sunday (August 1).
Described as a difficult par 3, the day was overcast and breezy, however both Wyn and Jim got over the 'knobbly knees' that can affect golfers when faced with challenging tee shots, each selected six irons and both aced their shots, one after the other, in what was a one in a million occasion.
In fact it was more than that, much more.
The odds of making hole in ones vary in the range of 3000 to 12,000 to one depending on your handicap, but to make two in a round? One of the members at Newport mentioned it was a 17 million to one chance, whilst online odds vary with one of the highest figures for two hole in ones on the same round being 67 million to one.
Newport Golf Club's members secretary David Lindquist informed the Western Telegraph of this most unusual sporting achievement finding only one word which could describe what happened.
"It was amazing," said David. "It's a well bunkered green on a tough hole. They both hit the target and it rolled in, and another followed which is totally amazing.
"We have the occasional hole in one but par 3s at Newport are not easy."
