Haverfordwest 6.

Llanybydder 12.

Haverfordwest battled hard against high-flying Llanybydder and although they were in contention throughout it proved significant they had three yellow cards to one in a match which was competitive but never dirty.

It was also to their credit that they stuck to their guns until the last whistle and were praised by coach Ken Davies because despite being without a number of key players thereplacements played their hearts out.

The Blues took the early lead with two penalties from winger Mike Venables in the opening eight minutes and they were still six points to the good at half time despite having Mark Busch and Tim Phillips placed in the sin-bin at almost the same time.

Their defence was magnificent, however, and it wasn't until they also lost centre Dan Harries to a yellow card that they conceded a score as Llanybydder prop Dyfrig Jones finally made their numerical superiority pay off with a barging try converted by outside-half Barry Thomas after 59 minutes.

There was no shortage of effort as Andrew Thicker, Richard Brazell, Giles Vaughan and Graham Jenkins all proved good ball winners and the rest of the Blues' pack answered the clarion call to action.

They were still very much in contention as the game reached its finale but as they tried desperately to score from inside their own territory. But they lost possession and had to settle for a bonus point when winger Rhys Bowen scored a corner try to give Llanybydder the double since they had already won by 32-6 at home.

The Blues' next home match is under their Merlins Bridge lights against Ammanford on Friday, February 8th starting at 7.15pm.
