PEMBROKESHIRE'S top young swimmers grabbed a record medal haul at the recent British Summer Championships and the Swim Wales Summer Open.

Three members of the Pembrokeshire County Swimming (PCS) squad made the long trip north to Sheffield after qualifying to compete at the British champs, held from July 22 to 28.

They returned to Wales with a bumper haul of five medals after making it to eight finals.

Lily Rice won four medals in the para multi class category, including gold in the 200m Individual Medley. She added silver in the 400m freestyle and two bronzes - in the 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke.

Saskia Webb also grabbed gold in the para multi class category for the 100m butterfly.

Grace Nichols, aged just 13, came 17th in the 200m backstroke for the 13/14 age category and made the final for the 100m backstroke, finishing 8th.

Craig Nelson, head coach of PCS, said: “This is a fantastic result. We are all so proud of the girls and the hard work and dedication they have shown in training to get to this stage.”

PCS is a performance swimming club, based in Haverfordwest. It comprises the best swimmers, selected from the county’s five development clubs - Haverfordwest Seals, Fishguard Flyers, Milford Tigers, Tenby Dolphins and Pembroke & District Swimming Club.

Success in Sheffield was followed by more podium topping performances at the Swim Wales Summer Open in Swansea, between August 3rd to 7th.

PCS secured 34 medals at the meet, including 14 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze as the club’s swimmers reached 69 finals. This was a huge improvement on the 22 medals that PCS won at the same meet in 2022.

The Pembrokeshire club was the second biggest to compete at the Swansea gala, by number of swimmers and entries, after Cardiff Swimming Club.

Nick Russell, assistant coach at PCS, said: “The improvement in the strength and depth of the club is reflected in the results we are getting at these big, national meets.

"The swimmers have worked hard to put themselves in a strong position for future success.”
