The Fishguard & Goodwick senior men hosted Bridgend 3 on Saturday in an entertaining game decided by a last-gasp winner for the visitors.

The first half was a proper end-to-end affair as both sides looked to shake off the post-Christmas rust and seize the initiative, with Bridgend having an early goal ruled out amidst a spell of early pressure, before the hosts started to press and after a few opportunities were the ones to break the deadlock from a short corner, where after a scramble Isaac Davies was able to convert from close range after a review from the umpires.

Fishguard & Goodwick looked to double the advantage and created more opportunities but couldn’t add to the lead and were hit with a sucker punch halfway through the first half as Bridgend broke down the right and cut back from the byline to net an equaliser. Bridgend pushed on but the hosts held firm to keep it level at the break.

After a half time regroup Fishguard & Goodwick came flying out of the blocks and retook the lead with a counterattack down the right which after a scramble in the D was converted by Morgan Boston-Williams. As the half went on, Bridgend grew back into the game and started to put on serious pressure forcing a series of opportunities. They had a series of short corners repelled until a foot on the line saw a penalty flick awarded which the visitors converted.

The game really opened up as both teams tired, and chances were spurned by both sides but with almost the final play of the game Bridgend forced a long corner, and again forced a chance down the right-hand side, cutting back and scoring to take a win at the death.

Final score: Fishguard & Goodwick 2 – 3 Bridgend 3.

Fishguard & Goodwick goal scorers: Isaac Davies and Morgan Boston-Williams. Player of the match: Trefor Boston-Williams.

It was a tough loss for the hosts after leading twice, but a young side especially in attack can take the positives from today into the second half of the season. Full credit to Bridgend who came down with a bare eleven and took the win on the road.

Fishguard & Goodwick now look ahead to next week with a second home game to start the new year against Cardiff & Met 6.
