Whitland 3.

Carmarthen Athletic 10.

Whitland suffered the disappointment of defeat in their local derby against Carmarthen Athletic as they failed to take their first-half chances and were unable to raise the tempo to fight back after the interval.

Carmarthen had first use of the wind but the Borderers could feel relatively pleased with their first-half performance, as they only trailed by 10-3 after taking the lead in the 22nd minute with a penalty by outside half Emyr Williams.

The Athletic responded with a soft try soon afterwards when winger Christiaan Roets failed to pouch a high ball near the Borderers’ posts.

From the ensuing pressure, open side flanker Lee Bassett crossed for a try, which full back Neil Davies converted.

Davies also notched a penalty but the Borderers’ defence, well marshalled by skipper Randall Evans, Lee Glanville and Ryan Michael, made sure there were no further points conceded.

Home supporters’ hopes of a big second half were unrewarded, however, with the loss of injured Raff Williams a big jolt to their lineouts. Carmarthen Athletic tackled and covered so successfully that the final whistle saw them with victory and Whitland having to endure the loss of vital points from a home match.

Whitland: Carwyn Jones, Will Davies, Lee Glanville, Aled Jones, Christiaan Roets, Emyr Williams, Gareth Davies, Gareth Lloyd, Mark Jones, Richard Smith, Raff Williams, Carwyn Davies, John Bowen, Ryan Michael, Randall Williams (Capt). Replacements: Rhun Morgan, Alan Proctor, Gareth Downes, Jack Mason.

The match between Maesteg and Narberth was called off because the Old Parish pitch was considered by the referee to be too wet.

Unfortunately, the decision was made just as the Otters’ supporters’ bus arrived in Maesteg.

They did a quick u-turn so that they could go to watch the club’s Athletic team play in Dunvant.
