Pembroke 34.

Bury Port 8.

Pembroke’s powerful pack laid the foundations for success against Bury Port at Crickmarren, as they were strong in the scrums, superb in the difficult lineout conditions and eager to secure 50/50 ball around the field.

The Scarlets led 10-0 at the break, despite playing into the wind and finished up with six tries as reward for some entertaining running rugby in the rain. Skipper Gareth Jones led by example in a lively front row which included Richard Mason and Tom Jones, whilst Dai Beynon, Owain Johns, Steve Dyde, Tom Surtees and Robin Badham made sure that half backs Ross McNally and Scott Bowen had quality possession to utilise.

No 8 Badham maintained his try-scoring form as he grabbed the first Pembroke try from close range before a sweeping move involving forwards and backs in some sharp passing, allowed full back Ryan Hayward to claim a cracking second try.

Badham popped up again after half time to secure his second score. As Nicky James, Matthew Lewis, Mark and John Williams made sure that their defensive work was sound, other tries followed from Owain Johns, Tom Surtees and Ross McNally, who also landed two conversions in the strong wind.

Bury Port could only muster an unconverted try by winger Martin Davies as outside half Matthew Kathryns slotted a sole penalty on a day when the Scarlets showed they need fear no-one in this section if they really play to their potential.
