Pontarddulais 8.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins 6.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins came close to victory at Pontarddulais but failed to take half chances at key times and had to pay the inevitable price.

The Quins are still suffering from losing a number of players to work commitments.

But they battled hard against a Bont side which is traditionally tough to beat at home and led 8-0 at half time through a try by veteran No 8 Nick Walters and a penalty by outside half Phil Rees.

As Quins’ coach Lenny Scourfield said afterwards: “We must learn to take our chances but we have a relatively inexperienced side at present and when we are back to full strength I’m confident that we will win tight matches like this one.”

With the advantage of the wind in the second half, the Quins would have settled for such a low interval deficit as reward for some excellent cover and tackling in which Darren Gibby, Gareth Scourfield, David and Danny Manning, plus Gary Burns and Gary Pickering caught the eye.

Dean Lawrence hauled the Bont back to just two points as he slotted two penalties.

But, try as they might, the Black and Whites couldn’t grab the score that would have gained them victory but at least had the consolation of a bonus point for their efforts.
