Fishguard and Goodwick 6.

St Davids 3.

Fishguard and St Davids fought out a tough local derby that was uncompromising and typically tight, as neither side was able to break down the other’s defence and the Seagulls eventually won by two penalties to one.

With the elements in their favour, Fishguard had a high proportion of the territorial advantage during the opening period. But the Saints tackled in typically tigerish fashion and all the Seagulls could muster was two penalties from scrum half Alun George, as experienced fly half Huw Evans tried in vain to prise open the Saints’ cover.

The second half saw both sides unable to really adapt to the conditions sufficiently to build a solid platform for sustained attack although the Saints did manage a 51st minute penalty by Phil Lamb from almost 40 metres.

Lamb might have had another chance of reaching the target in such a strong wind but opted for a kick to the corner instead and the Seagulls managed to scramble the ball clear.

It meant that Fishguard secured the spoils but St Davids had the consolation of a bonus point and just a three-point deficit when they entertain their old rivals in the return league fixture which doubles up as the Seagulls Cup, which Fishguard currently holds.
