Haverfordwest 25.

Amman United 13.

Haverfordwest secured a welcome home win as they defied the awful conditions to beat Amman United.

A strong second half performance saw them battle back from a 5-6 interval deficit. They might even have celebrated a bonus point, but were denied late on when referee Andrew Davies (Aberystwyth) decided to disallow Tom Pellowe’s claims for a try.

The Blues took an early lead as they played into the driving rain when winger Mike Venables showed his handling skills and tenacity.

He caught a diagonal punt from outside half Steve Williams by out-leaping his taller opponent and then brushing off a would-be tackler to pounce for an unconverted solo try.

Amman United fought back with two well-struck penalties from chunky outside half Gavin Lewis, who almost set up a try with a clever chip ahead, but Mike Venables made a try-saving tackle on Huw Jenkins to redeem the situation.

Play was held up for a long time as Amman United hooker Dean Sherington sustained a neck injury and was taken to hospital. Referee Davies sensibly called a halt for half time as the players stood around and the weather worsened.

With the elements in their favour, the Blues took command from the outset, despite having to put up with uncontested scrums, with Richard Brazell emerging from a terrific forward surge to claim a try which Steve Williams converted.

Williams added two good penalties, but the Blues conceded something of a soft try to centre Huw Jenkins, which Lewis converted to bring Amman United back into contention.

But the Blues had the final word as replacement flanker Richard Walters, on for Brett Davies, crashed over for Williams to add the extra points.

The Blues thought they had scored the fourth try which would have given them the bonus point but the ref was unsighted as Pellowe crashed through.

It was still a very good win in the conditions for Craig Jones’ team.
