Penarth Town won the Barry Cup for the second time in three years at Jenner Park on Sunday, defeating Barry Athletic on penalties after an end-to-end match which ended six apiece.

There was no shortage of entertainment as the Barry side, who last week beat the same opponents in the Supporters’ Cup final, took a ninth minute lead when Danny Hansen-Taylor headed home from an Alife Tipples corner.

Penarth equalised on the half-hour when Paul Beedell set up David Shallis at the near post.

They then took the lead when a Beedell shot took a wicked deflection to send the ‘keeper the wrong way, five minutes before the break and made it 3-1 at half-time when Beedell headed in Macauley Winton’s cross at the far post.

With Barry Athletic scoring through Alfie Tipples straight after the break to make it 3-2, nobody could have anticipated the pulsating second half that was to come.

Two goals in three minutes from Penarth’s Shallis earned him a hat-trick and the Brian Riseborough Man of the Match award, making it 5-2, and Beedell scored his second a few minutes later to make it 6-2.

It looked like game over, but Athletic had different ideas.

In the 67th minute, Oliver Tipples was left unmarked in the middle and lashed the ball home.

A few minutes later, substitute Tyler Bolton’s low shot from the right came off the post and into the net, and then Teejay Caton scored with a back post header to make it 6-5.

The comeback was complete in the 86th minute, when an Alfie Tipples free-kick levelled the scores, sending the game to penalties.

After such a game, it was unfair that one side had to lose – but that’s cup football, and Penarth scored all five of their penalties, with ‘keeper Ellis Davey pulled off a crucial save to win 5-4 on spot kicks.
