A family is flying the flags for the Breast Cancer Campaign this week in their aim to raise money and awareness for the charity.

Around 200 quilted squares are currently on show in the garden at Caffle Brewery, Llawhaden after being crafted and donated by well-wishers from throughout Pembrokeshire, Wales and England. They can be viewed today (Thursday June 19), Friday and Saturday at the Quilts on my Patch event, where admission of £5 will be donated to the charity.

Afterwards, the squares will be made into quilts for children in hospital via Project Linus.

Pat Bannister of The Rhos - who is a keen quilter herself - is the inspiration behind her family’s fundraising, after making a good recovery from surgery and treatment for cancer last year.

A sporting Pat-athlon challenge - devised by granddaughter Gina Bannister, aged 24 - has already raised more than £1,000.

She and brother Tom, aged 22, cycled the 17.5 miles from Llawhaden to Lawrenny and then rowed the nine miles from Lawrenny to Haverfordwest.

Then sister Kelly, aged 26, joined them to run from Haverfordwest back to Llawhaden - a 13.5 mile route.

Their sponsors were Jelly Egg, Narberth; the Martin James Health Club, Kilgetty, where Gina works as a personal trainer and Caffle Brewery, which is run by parents Sharon and Chris.

“The fundraising has gone so well, and we have had a great response to the appeal for quilt pieces, which we are flying from washing lines in the garden like Tibetan prayer flags,” said Sharon.

On Saturday, the brewery - postcode SA67 8DS - will be open in the evening between 6pm and 11pm to celebrate everyone’s efforts, with live music, games, at least three ales on tap and an auction in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign of items donated by local businesses.
