Jones rap for 'Prima Donas'

Prendergast Villa 4 Saundersfoot Sports 1

Saundersfoot Sports manager Phil Jones blasted those first choice players missing from his team on Saturday after they went down to a sorry defeat against Prendergast Villa.

Both sides gained promotion last year with the visitors ending up as champions but from this display, unless they get their act together, it appears that survival in Division One could be a bigger challenge than was first expected.

"This was a disappointing result," he said, "But I saw it coming. There was no pre-season training at all and the Prima Donas of this club need to pull their fingers out and knuckle down to some hard work, then we might survive." Jones wouldn't elaborate any further on who these Prima Donas were, but suffice it is to say that he will be having a quiet word over the coming weeks with those he feels are not pulling their weight.

Take nothing away from Prendergast however, their second half performance was very impressive indeed. Using a gusty wind to their advantage they added three more goals to the one scored in the first half, which was a drab affair if the truth be told.

In fairness to both teams, it is still early in the season and the skill levels won't be at their sharpest, but nevertheless some of the football on display was pretty dire.

Prendergast took the lead mid-way through the first half when Steffan Ateyo took a free-kick and delivered the ball into the box. Visiting keeper Craig Reardon came out to collect but somehow missed the ball which went over his head and Carwyn Lewis nipped in to score an opportunist goal.

Saundersfoot, rocked by conceding such a soft goal, re-grouped and Darren Umanee went close but shot over the bar. Soon after and he delivered what would have been a wonderful cross, but no-one could get on the end of it whereas Prendergast were only stopped from scoring again by a wonderful tackle by Simon Brace when Darren O'Leary looked as though he was through to score.

Saundersfoot started the second half much brighter as Russell Evans went close to scoring following a good build up from midfield but it was the home team who scored next when Lee Thomas delivered a superb corner and O'Leary rushed on from the deep to powerfully header home.

Prendergast continued to attack at every opportunity and were only stopped from scoring by some telling tackles from Brace but even he was powerless to stop their third after Carl Mason broke free down the right, crossed the ball in and O'Leary rushed on to head the ball home again.

Despite being three goals down, Saundersfoot pulled one back immediately after Robbie Beynon's shot crept under Dai Smith's hands. Any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed however when Reardon fumbled a cross from the left and O'Leary beat the covering defence to slam the ball home from a few yards out to complete his hat-trick.

Beynon almost pulled one back but shot just wide while O'Leary had a chance at the end to grab his fourth but rushed his shot when he had more time, and the ball flew over the bar.

That proved to be one of the final moments of the match which left Villa manager Steve Williams delighted saying:

"I was very impressed with the way we played today. O'Leary was exceptional. We were a bit slow starting off but got into it at the end. It's been a great start to the season which was beyond my expectations, I hope it continues."
