The Covenant (12)

There have been some pretty decent movies based on magic, witches, vampires and the supernatural.

For example: The Craft, Witches of Eastwick, Interview With a Vampire and Dracula, to name just a few.

Unfortunately, The Covenant is not one of them. From the producers of Underworld this film proves to be just as disappointing as its predecessor.

The storyline is original at least and follows the four sons of Ipswich who are sworn to secrecy over the strange powers they have inherited.

Back in 1692 their families formed a covenant of silence over their powers to save them from the persecution of witches that was sweeping the Ipswich Colony of Massachusetts at the time.

A fifth family was banished from the covenant after seeking more power and the bloodline disappeared.

But now a young and very angry descendent of the fifth family has turned up to seek his revenge.

At times the film attempts to copy The Lost Boys, pinching the scene where they jump over the cliff, but in others it resembles an episode of The OC.

The special effects are pretty impressive and the acting isn't too awful either but this is an unbelievably average film.

The plot plods along quite nicely and I guess if you're 13 years old you might quite like The Covenant but you would be better off watching The Craft all the same.

Definitely not one to rush to see but you could do worse if you are bored.

RATING: ** * The Covenant and all the latest DVD releases are available in Woolworths, Haverfordwest.
