It’s been 25 years since Clarbeston Road Players last performed Dick Whittington and how things have changed. But classics never dim in popularity and this year’s pantomime is sure to be as popular as it was a quarter of a century ago.

Clarbeston Road Players did everything on a shoestring in those days, with only one drop cloth and handmade posters and tickets.

Nowadays the amateur company has four drop cloths for its background scenery and very impressive professional posters are produced.

Longtime member and director of the Clarbeston Road Players, Bobbie Sheldrake, said: “We trawled around the charity shops and our own wardrobes were used for costumes then. We now have a huge wardrobe but we still visit the charity shops because you can never find exactly what you want.

“The chorus of children were enthusiastic in 1984. In 2009 most of them are veterans with several pantos and shows under their collective belts and they are very good.”

This year’s Dick Whittington features more junior members than ever before and Bobbie calls these young actors the Players’ insurance that drama will continue to flourish in the area for many years to come.

The Dick Whittington set was painted by recently retired art teacher Nan Warlow who also painted the set 25 years ago.

“Looking back at 1984 again Sian Bushell was Dick Whittington. She was several months pregnant at the time and worrying that the shorts wouldn’t fit.

“This year’s Dick is Tessa Rees. Alice Fitzwarren was played by a very young me and this year it’s Ellie James from Narberth. Back in 1984, Alderman Fitzwarren was played by Tony Morris and this year Dickie Llewellin is playing the part.”

The lighting and sound system have been updated but otherwise Clarbeston Road Memorial Hall remains the same as when Dick Whittington was last performed.

A pre-show meal can be booked in the Cross Inn and your seat can be reserved — and of course the Players’ welcome is as warm as ever.

Dick Whittington will be performed tonight, December 5th, 10th, 11th and 12th. Doors open at 7pm, with curtain up at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £6 (£3 children) available from Ocky White Travel, Vincent Davies, the mobile post office, Cross Inn or group members.
