Noel Sullivan shakes off any remnants of his pop star past in We Will Rock You, which is currently at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff.

While the Welshman’s American accent may have sounded a bit shaky at times, his beautiful voice more than made up for it, as he more than proved his is worthy of being a leading man.

Featuring a whole host of Queen songs, We Will Rock You is set in the future on Planet Mall, formerly Earth, which is under the control of Globalsoft, a corporation that has banned live music, instruments and songs, and feeds computerised pop music to the masses.

Killer Queen and her chief of police, Khashoggi, serve to crush any sign of individuality. A group of rebels, known as the Bohemians, are joined by Galileo and Scaramouche, and strive to break free.

Amanda Coutts brings plenty of laughs as the feisty Scaramouche, but anyone who thinks she’s just there for the laughs would be blown away by her voice. She and Sullivan have a nice stage chemistry, and are believable as a couple as the story progresses.

Jenny Douglas, who may be familiar to viewers of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Over the Rainbow, impresses in her debut as Meat, particularly when singing No-One But You.

Rhydian Roberts is well cast as Khashoggi (he didn’t even need to change his hair), but the role allows limited stage time, and it would have been lovely to see more of him.

Ian Reddington and Leon Lopez bring plenty of laughs, but Tiffany Graves as Killer Queen, while entertaining, seemed to have her voice drowned out by the beats of her songs.

Even if you’re not a huge Queen fan, the songs ensure you will come awaywith the biggest of grins on your face. The finale of We Are The Champiions, We Will Rock You and Bohemian Rhapsody (which featured Brian May on press night) pretty much leaves you wanting to see it all over again.

We Will Rock You is at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, until April 17th.
