Follow the yellow brick road to Pembroke School to see its production of The Wizard of Oz this week.

The school’s version is closely based on the famous Judy Garland film and is about Dorothy Gale, a young girl in Kansas who is swept up inside a tornado. She arrives in a magical land where she meets strangely familiar characters – the brainless Scarecrow, the heartless Tin Man and the cowardly Lion. They have a series of adventures as they travel through the land of Oz searching for a Wizard who they are told has the power to fulfil their dreams and return Dorothy to her home.

The stage production is punctuated by a series of outstanding and well known songs, choreographed to involve more than 40 students. Sixth form student Becky James plays Dorothy; Dean Rowlands (year 11) plays the Scarecrow; Tyler Goodrick (year ten) plays the Tin Man and Becky Hunt (year 10) plays the Lion. The good witch is played by Megan Kenniford, while Holly Brace is taking on the role of the wicked witch. The Wizard is played by year nine pupil Sam Richards. Head of music at the school, Samantha Hughes said: "Rehearsals have been intense – occupying two full weekends, several full day rehearsals in holiday time and most evenings and lunchtimes in the school week. Standards of performance are increasingly more impressive."

She added: "Audiences can look forward to some stunning musical moments with the full cast performing in the Munchkin scene, Emerald City and the Jitterbug. The principle players also display some outstanding performances in their solo scenes."

Performances are tonight (Wednesday) tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday, starting at 7pm. Tickets available from the school on 01646 682461 or via admin@pembrokeschool.org. They cost £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.
