Readers have their say on last week’s front page story revealing that family members of patients being treated in hospital at Carmarthen have been forced to sleep in their cars because they cannot afford to travel backwards and forwards: KATE LEDWITH said: “My partner slept in our van in the car park too the night/ early morning I had our baby.

“He spent two days either side of his car park stay driving the hour and a bit back and forth from Pembrokeshire to Carmarthen.

“Apart from the cost and the inconvenience of it - long drive, difficult to find a parking space, having to juggle our toddler - we worried he was so tired from it all that he might have a crash en route.

Have Drakeford etc factored that possibility into their plans - alongside all the other potentially dangerous possibilities?!”

RACHEL REITH said: “According to the leaflet I got to do with being induced tomorrow at Glangwili husbands/ partners are allowed to stay once labour has started but not before then.

“I won’t be letting my hubby go anywhere once labour has started and will give the ward staff what for if they try and send him home.”

REGINALD SMITHE said: “This has been happening for a while, I do the hospital rounds and have been farmed off as far as Llantrisant with my wife. This is the reason I now have a van.

“Withybush service have been on the decline for the past 10 years and from my perspective it’s just been a large consultation room. I’ve met many wonderful people and now advise anyone to be prepared before you go Glangwili that you WILL end up sleeping in car.”

HELEN MILLS said: “Why are Pembrokeshire people being subjected to this when there is a perfectly good hospital in the town of Haverfordwest?

“There is nothing left in Pembrokeshire the refineries have gone the power station etc how is the economic structure of the county meant to create jobs from nothing out of nowhere?

“I was asked not so long ago what would be my dreams of winning the lottery and what or where I would spend it.

“They too were from Pembrokeshire just like myself and surprised at my reply ‘I would put a huge chunk back into Pembrokeshire the county of my birth as there are no jobs in it for local people’.”

CLOE COLLINS said: “I know people who have slept in their cars also. Also one of my friends was in labour and her family was sent home at 2am and told to come back the next day. She had the baby half hour after her family had left. If that was at Withybush her family could have gotten back there within ten minutes! Ridiculous.”

STEVE ATKINS said: “There are stories being shared nearly every day at SWAT Save Withybush Hospital.

“The cutbacks at the hospital are and/or will affect every person in the area and that’s regardless of whether you’re Tory, Labour, Green Party, Plaid Cymru or non-political.

“It also puts a massive pressure on the other hospitals that people are being referred to.”

SIMON PLANT said: “Absolutely disgusting and in these temperatures it is damaging to health which will put more pressure on the system. Ridiculous.”
