Haverfordwest

The funeral took place recently at St Davids Church, Prendergast, of Nora Elizabeth Evans (nee Bacon), who died at Withybush hospital on January 22nd after a short illness. She was 83.

Born in Bombay on December 8th, 1924 when her father was serving in the British Army, Nora lived in Edinburgh before moving to West Block house in Dale and attending Dale School.

The family later moved to Defensible Barracks, Pembroke Dock and Nora attended the local secondary school.

She was predeceased by her brothers Dennis in 1937 and Kenneth in 2007.

During the Second World War Nora trained as an electrical engineer with Lucas Research Laboratories, Birmingham, returning to Pembroke Dock in 1946 where she met and married her husband, Gwyn Evans.

The couple made their home in Haverfordwest and Nora trained as a teacher. She took up her first teaching appointment at the Secondary Modern School, Haverfordwest and later at Tasker Milward School, retiring in 1986.

Nora was a member of Soroptimist International Haverfordwest, holding office at local and regional level. She loved to play and coach bowls and was a member of Haverfordwest bowling club, the Meads Indoor Bowls Club and the Disabled bowls club.

An enthusiastic traveller Nora visited many countries and had good friends around the world. Recently she enjoyed the company of the Teddy Ladies, knitting teddy bears for charitable use.

Following the death of her son Gareth in 1983, she and Gwyn began to raise money for Sightsavers, a charity which offers treatment to people in India with eyesight problems. They raised more than £20,000 and the achievement was recognised when Nora received the Haverfordwest Town Council award of merit in 2005.

Nora was predeceased by Gwyn in 1993.

She leaves to mourn Christine and Byron (daughter and son-in-law), Steven, Bethan, David, Nia and Sian (grandchildren) and great-grandson Ifan.

Family mourners at the church were Jean Bacon (sister-in-law) Andrew and Gary Bacon, Pat John and Stephen John (nieces and nephews).

The bearers were Stephen and David Williams (grandsons) Andrew and Gary Bacon (nephews) and Martin Tweedy (family friend).

The services were conducted by Canon Geoffrey Gwyther and Rev Malcolm Shapland.

A tribute to Nora was read by her grandson, David and her nephew, Andrew Bacon read verses at the crematorium.

There were family flowers only, but donations in lieu for Sightsavers to Bryon Williams, Daneleigh, Castle Rise, Spittal.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

Mr A. M. Waters

Templeton

The funeral was held on January 29th of Alun Morgan Waters, of Sunnymead, Templeton, who died at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen on January 21st, aged 75.

A native of Templeton, Alun worked for 30 years for Dairy Crest/Unigate in Whitland, before he retired in 1989. He also was a plant fitter during his working life.

He was predeceased by Dolly Waters in 1988.

The principal mourners and family left to mourn are: Jayne and Gary Jones (daughter and son-in-law); Nicola and Chris Reynolds (daughter and son-in-law); Lewis Reynolds (grandson); Graham and Jean Mortimer (cousin and husband); Betty James (cousin); Hildred Morgan (cousin-in-law); Phil Morgan (nephew); Barbie Morris (niece); George and Jean Lewis (brother-in-law and wife); Marjorie Lewis (sister-in-law); Stuart Lewis (nephew); Graham Lewis (nephew) and Andrea Hoare (niece).

The service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium and was officiated by Rev Elwyn John.

The bearers were Phil Morgan, Gareth Morris, Mike Cole, Arthur Prosser, Peter Beynon and Ray Griffiths.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu for the ICU West Wales Hospital and Narberth Health Centre to E. C. Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mrs E. M. Lewis

Kilgetty

The death occurred in hospital on January 24th of Elonwy May Lewis, of Hill Lane, Kilgetty. She was 72.

Originally from Greenplains, Stepaside she was a home help for Pembrokeshire County Council when she retired.

She was predeceased by her husband Ralph Thomas John Lewis.

She was a member of the Golden Age Club in Kilgetty.

The family left to mourn and principal mourners were: Kevin and Angela Lewis, Ian and Michelle Lewis (sons and daughters-in-law); Huw, Joseph, Samantha, Matthew, Michael, James and Rebecca (grandchildren); Elvet and Barbara Wilkins (brother and sister-in-law); Cora and David Callan (sister and brother-in-law), plus nieces and nephews and their partners, great nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on January 31st and was officiated by Canon Colin Bowen.

The bearers were Eric and Philip Callan, and Nigel and Dilwyn Davies.

There were family flowers only with donations in lieu for Wales Air Ambulance which can be sent to E. C. Thomas and son, Archways, Green Plains, Stepaside, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.

MRS F. M. VINES

JOHNSTON

The death occurred at ward 12, Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, on January 29th of Frances Margaret (Cissie) Vines, of Orchard Court, Johnston.

Mrs Vines, who was 89, was a native of Solihull, Midlands, and worked for Bryant and Tucker's Embroidery Factory as a filing clerk for 57 years, moving with her husband to Langford Road, Johnston in 1988, to be near their only child Cindy, who lived in Milford Haven.

Her husband Albert (Bert) predeceased her in 1992.

She became involved in many interests, but her life revolved mainly around her daughter Cindy, her three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed chapel on Sundays while on Monday evenings she took part in keep fit in Orchard Court, which she maintained until a few weeks ago.

She also enjoyed coffee mornings in the Oasis' in Johnston and Orchard Court, bingo, art classes, Sunshine Club and sisterhood, trips in the car, meals out and the occasional holiday.

Family left to mourn are: Cindy Howes and Bob Martin (daughter and partner), Jason and Tracy Clarke (grandson and wife), Julie and Des Potter (granddaughter and husband), Sam Howes and Martyn Bowen (granddaughter and partner), and great-grandchildren Ben, Lauren, Leanne, Stacy-Louise, Daniel, Deanna and baby Jack.

Derek Trivette officiated at the funeral at Johnston Baptist Chapel, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, on Monday, February 4th.

The bearers were Jason Clarke (grandson), Martyn Bowen (granddaughter's partner), Barry Atak (niece's husband), Kevin (family friend).

There were family flowers only but donations in lieu for the Paul Sartori Foundation to 31 Haven Road, Haverfordwest.

Mrs H. M. Thomas

Milford Haven

Haulwen Mary Thomas, of Observatory Avenue Milford Haven, died on January 30th at Withybush Hospital.

Mrs Thomas, who was 83, was the widow of the late Ivor Campbell Thomas who predeceased her in 1980.

Family left to mourn are: Jane Mundell and Jonathan (daughter and son-in-law); Ann Saxton and Alan (daughter and son-in-law); Rachel, Lucy and Kirsty (granddaughters) and nephew Andrew Grant along with several nieces and nephews and cousins too numerous to mention.

The bearers were Andrew Grant and Billy Barrett.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Frank Newing, of Tom Newing and Sons, Milford Haven.

MR D. H. GRIFFITHS

HAVERFORDWEST

The death occurred on January 30th after a two week stay at Withybush Hospital, of David Horace (Peter) Griffiths, of Portfield, Haverfordwest.

A native of Haverfordwest, where he was very well-known and popular, Mr Griffiths, who was 81, attended Dew Street School and later top Barn Street School.

Upon leaving, he worked for a short time in a local garage and at Treffgarne Quarry, before joining the Welsh Guards in 1945.

He served in Palestine until 1948 when he joined the GPO as a telephone engineer, where he stayed until retirement after 38 years in 1986.

A keen sportsman, he loved watching and playing sport. He played cricket for Johnston and bowls for Milford Haven Bowling Club, and was a life member of Haverfordwest Cricket Club and the RAOB Club in Snowdrop Lane.

All through his life Peter enjoyed his social activities and the past 30 years shared his time with his close friend Margaret.

In his younger days he was a member of Hill Park Baptist Church.

As his health was failing, Peter was cared for by his devoted sister Margaret.

The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium on Friday February 8th when Canon Geoffrey Gwyther officiated.

The bearers were members of the Welsh Guards Association, Pembrokeshire branch, Harry Lovering, Bod Ridley, John Lloyd and Bill Lloyd.

Family left to mourn are: Margaret Griffiths (sister), Betty Pickles (sister), Margaret Mills (close friend), Mike and Joan Pickles (nephew), Susan and Laurence Hayward (niece), Andrew and Alison Pickles (great nephew and great niece), Ashleigh and Jacqueline Hayward (great nephew and great niece), Elizabeth Southey, Pat Williams, John and Cynthia Davies, Pat and Merlin Watkins (cousins).

The principal mourners were: Margaret Griffiths, Margaret Mills, Mike and Joan Pickles, Andrew and Alison Pickles, Laurence Hayward, Susan Hayward, Elizabeth Southey, John and Cynthia Davies, Pat and Merlin Watkins, Dorothy and Bill Lloyd, together with other relatives, friends and neighbours too numerous to mention.

Unable to attend were Betty Pickles (sister), Susan Hayward (niece), Ashleigh and Jacqueline Hayward (great nephew and great niece).

There were family flowers only and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Roy Folland and Son, Haverfordwest.

Mr A. J. Barrington

Roch

The death of Anthony John Barrington, of Marlboro, Church Road, Roch, occurred on Friday, February 1st.

Mr Barrington, a self-employed builder, died aged 60 after a short stay at Withybush Hospital.

John took a keen interest in Formula One motor racing and was a member of Pembrokeshire Autograss Club.

He also enjoyed gardening and amateur astronomy.

Family left to mourn are: Eileen (wife); Louise Barrington (daughter); Diane Wheeler (sister); Julie Williams (niece); Huw Wheeler (nephew); Pauline and Craig Morrissey; Christine and Mike Williams; Tishy and Declan Bolger; Julie Maher (sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law); John and Sue Maher (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); Luke, Chloe and Ross Morrissey; Katie, Laura and Sophie De La Cruz; Rhys Williams, Faye and Kieran Bolger and Conor Maher (nieces and nephews).

The funeral was held at Parc Gwyn crematorium on Friday, February 8th and was officiated by Rev Michael Rowlands.

The bearers were Keith Williams, Michael Williams, John Jones and Watkyn Richards (friends).

There were family flowers only.

Donations in lieu for the intensive care unit at Withybush Hospital can be sent to the hospital manager.

MR G. E. BEUGELAAR

MILFORD HAVEN

The funeral took place at the Hamilton Court Funeral Home and Parc Gwyn Crematorium on February 8th, of George Edward Beugelaar, of Pill Road, Milford Haven.

Mr Beugelaar died at his home, aged 83, on February 3rd.

A native of Milford Haven, Mr Beugelaar had worked as a slinger at the Royal Naval Mine Depot at Milford Haven.

He enjoyed gardening and walking his dog.

He leaves to mourn: His wife Constance Maud; Anne and Mike, Jean and Mike, Betty and Brian, Linda and Joe (daughters and sons-in-law) and Paul (son); Victoria, Rachel, Philip, Amanda, Adam, Gemma, Julie, Lucy, Kelly, Nicola and Katlyne (grandchildren); Amy, Danielle, Nadia, Liam, Calum, Eve, Menna, Matthew, Sophie, Chloe, James, Joshua, Rhys and Carley (great-grandchildren) and sisters Mavis and Winnie.

The services at Hamilton Court Funeral Home and at Parc Gwyn were conducted by Rev Martyn Evans.

Mrs M. Lloyd

Fishguard

Margaret Lloyd died at St Teresa's Rest Home, Fishguard on Monday, February 4th.

She was the wife of the late D. Idwal Lloyd (formerly of Trefin, Blaenffos, and the Tregaron Hotel, London) and the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Evans, of Puncheston.

She leaves to mourn: Beti (daughter); David (son-in-law); Owen and John (grandsons), James and Jennifer (great-grandchildren) and her nieces and nephews.

The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth on Friday, February 8th and was conducted by Rev D. Carl Williams and attended by family members and friends.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Paul Jenkins and Sons Funeral Directors, Fishguard.
