The new NHS Trust responsible for Pembrokeshire will be called the Hywel Dda Trust, it was announced today.

The Trust - named after the famous Welsh ruler - will be created by the merger of Pembrokeshire & Derwen, Ceredigion and Mid Wales and Carmarthenshire NHS Trusts.

The new Trust will be officially formed on April 1st 2008.

The next stage in the process is to appoint a Chair, Chief Executive and Non Executive Directors for the new Trust.

The recruitment process for the new Trust Chair has already begun and all Non Executive posts are being advertised for the first time this week.

Following this, recruitment will begin for the Chief Executive and remaining Executive Directors.

There is still no confirmation of where the new Trust will be based.

Hywel Dda - also known as Hywel The Good is remembered as one of the most successful native Welsh rulers prior to the Norman Conquest.

By 942 AD, he ruled over most of the country and claimed the title King of all Wales.

His great achievement was to create the country's first uniform legal system, in which the laws of Wales, often called the Laws of Hywel, were codified and set down in writing for the first time.

What do you think of the new name? Leave your comments below.

I apologise for never having heard of him, despite 6 years of living here and I have done much to learn about the like of Rebecca etc....
When the Trust gets reported on BBC or ITV Wales news, no one will surely realise it related to West Wales, so why didnt they use West Wales NHS Trust as a name.
Have they created another name like Dyfed?
At least everyone knows where West Wales is!
I will waive my £25,000 consultancy fee if they wish to adopt my suggested name.

Being a proud but, unfortunately, a non-welsh speaking Welshman, I think Hywel Dda Trust has a certain 'joie de vivre' ring to it and seems an appropriate choice for this area. After all, West Wales NHS Trust appears to be a teeny bit 'anglified' for my taste.

As the Hywel Dda Centre is in Whitland, may I suggest a conspiracy theory, that this naming is a precursor to a super hospital being built there? Just as was proposed in the first place?

Don't worry about the name of the new trust, give a couple of years and we will be told that we will have to revert back to a single trust - as it not working !!!

"named after the famous Welsh ruler"

If he was 'famous' then it wouldn't be a requirement to include an explanation as to who the f**k Hywel Dda was would it?

What a load of bullhooks. The people in charge of this nonsense need a right kick up the jacksee as do we ALL for letting these men in suits sit around having to 'think' about a name for a hospital service.

West Wales Trust would have been fine. No doubt the extortionately overpaid management won't even be able to bloody PRONOUNCE Hywel Dda correctly and it will become known as the High Well Dai Trust.

Is there anyone running these organisations that actually thinks the same way as the common man in the street?

Andrew, please tell me that you're joking when you say that £'s were paid to a consultant to dream up this name?????????

PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!

*shakes head*

I thought Barry John was the King of Wales?

Calm Down John Dow, I mean Doe ...
I was being a bit facetious as organisations tends to employ consultants at great expense to come up with names.
I understand it was going to be called "Here We Die NHS Trust", but a slightly deaf Welsh speaker misheard what he said and "Here We Die became "Hywel Dda".
I presume these consultants will now spend millions telling all and sundry who Hywel Dda was, put artist impression prints up on all the walls of this great bloke.
With the petty cash left, there may be money left for a few plasters and an asprin.
I guess if they called it the Rebecca NHS Trust, the powers that be feared the plebs would storm the buildings and burn them down?
Finally, I am surprised there was some support for the West Wales NHS Trust. Instead, we have the Here We Die NHS Trust.

what a load of cobblers Andrew Lye. the way you put comments accross is laughable.having been a CUSTOMER of withybush after a major trauma (no not paying my council tax this year) i have nothing but admiration for the staff who work under great strain in this organisation. The name change is not important what is important is the delivery of services which has improved over the last 11 years after many years of underfunding. we need a period of stability and WAG to keepo their noses out so that professional caring people can get on with the job. god help us if some of the people that spout about things in the local press get up of their backsides and actually do something constructive as it will increase the hospital intake significantly. especially CCU

Quite..... The people at the front line of our local services do a great job so yes, when months of highly paid peoples time is utilised in order to name the new Trust it is disheartening when it has no meaning in conjunction with the NHS.
The name Hywel Dda does not tell us anything. At least West Wales NHS Trust tells us where and what it is... but never mind, there will be another re-organisation in about 3 years - it gives them just enough time to fluff this one up before keeping people in jobs to organise another!

While I appreciate the concern re. the name, calling it West Wales NHS Trust doesn't really include us here in Ceredigion...Mid and West Wales might exclude Carmarthen (the chance would be a fine thing) so how about "The Hywel Dda NHS Trust for Mid and South West Wales"...what a sign that would make...especially bi-lingually; anyone care to translate?

Please- the CCU, MAU, medicine, orto and surgical don't have enough beds to support any more admissions. No coronaries please!!

Surely it's not the name that should be the gold standard, surely it's the quality of the services provided by the excellent staff at these hospitals that counts. They can call it the Andrew Lye West Wales Truss(sic) for all I care.
