ANGER over proposed changes to pensions and retirement procedure has resulted in firefighters across the county going on strike.

Fire Brigade Union (FBU) members in Haverfordwest, Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven are among those across Wales and England striking between noon and 4pm today (Wednesday).

As well as concerns over increasing pension contributions, FBU members are worried older fire-fighters who fail to meet required fitness levels will lose their jobs and miss out on pension support.

The FBU said: “Although the government has previously claimed that older fire-fighters could be moved to less physically demanding roles, FBU research found only a handful of ‘redeployment’ opportunities in fire and rescue services, meaning mass sackings would be inevitable.”

At Haverfordwest station, where almost half of staff are over 50,  one firefighter said: "None of us want to be here but we've got to make a stand, for us and future generations."
