Eight Pembrokeshire public toilets to close on April 1

EIGHT public lavatories will close this April, making a total of 14 conveniences lost to Pembrokeshire in just six months.

A report, scheduled to go before Pembrokeshire County Council’s (PCC) Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday, singled out loos in Croesgoch, Cwm Gwaun, Dinas Cross, Llangwm, Lawrenny, Mathry, St Florence and Upper Solva for closure.

In November 2013, six lavatories in Burton, Fishguard, Milford Haven, Pembroke and Pembroke Dock were shut.

The buildings will be sold off or demolished, with the exception of the Burton loo.

The council is currently attempting to transfer a covenant, to forever maintain a convenience on the site, to another party.

Since March 2013, PCC has worked with various parties in a bid to find new operators for toilets under review.

Subject to lease agreements, loos in Clynderwen, Crymych, Letterston, Llanstadwell, Maenclochog, Milford Haven (The Rath), Pembroke (Black Horse), St Davids (Quickwell Hill), St Ishmaels and Trefin will transfer out of the council’s operation on April 1.

Local councils will take over the running costs for some of these conveniences, while in other cases communities have opted to run and pay for the toilets themselves.

Negotiations are on-going with Neyland Town Council and Nevern Community Council Regarding facilities in their areas.

PCC has also discussed putting the operation of remaining public toilets out to tender, giving interested parties the option to charge for the use of the facilities.

This is a joke. As Welshman says we rely on the tourists in this beautiful county and to see our services being hacked is a joke. It is bad enough the amount of dog poo we see on our streets and walkways what's next people standing in bushes. Our lights turned off, our roads not repaired, our bin collection cut...Maybe it is time we cut some of the idiots who we make this decisions might save this county a lot more....
