5,000 without power as clear up begins after huge storm
Updated 4:53pm Thursday 13th February 2014 in News
This live event has finished
- Around 5,000 customers still without power after storm.
- Nine schools are closed.
- Some roads remain blocked.
That's where we will leave the live updates for today. Any major updates will be reported via the Western Telegraph website as usual.
WEATHER update for Wales for Friday:
Another area of low pressure is expected to bring further wet and windy weather across Wales during Friday but this is not expected to be a repeat of yesterday’s storm. Nonetheless, the rainfall will be sufficiently heavy at times to bring localised flooding on the roads, particularly across southern areas of Wales. The latest flood guidance statement indicates a low likelihood of significant disruption due to surface water flooding and a medium likelihood of minor impacts with respect to river flooding.
Strong south-easterly then southerly winds on Friday are expected to gust to between 40 and 45 mph in many areas and may well gust to around 60 to 65 mph in some areas along western parts of the Bristol Channel coast. Some minor impacts may occur, particularly where there is pre existing damage, but these speeds are significantly less than those experienced yesterday.
Another windy day is in store with showers or longer periods of rain, bringing further localised flooding on the roads. The strong west to north-westerly winds are expected to gust to around 55 mph on exposed coasts in the north and west of Wales. These speeds are not unusual but again some impacts could occur due to already weakened trees/structures.

Pembrokeshire County Council staff who worked hard overnight clearing away fallen trees, debris and roof tiles, in a bid to get traffic moving around the county again today have been thanked by the council leader.
Highways and area maintenance teams worked until 23:00, starting again at 05:30 this morning, dealing with more than 150 reports of trees, large branches and debris.
The County Council’s contact centre usually receives around 1,100 phone calls on a normal Wednesday.
Yesterday it received 3,184 calls - more than 2,000 extra.
There were 150 reports of damage to property, council infrastructure, schools, utilities infrastructure and street lights.
At 15:00 there were 26 road closures in place. Council crews also helped deal with eight flooding incidents and two oil spills.
A total of 25 schools closed early due to the severe weather. A further nine schools are closed today.
On Tuesday and Wednesday alone, the Council’s Facebook page had more than a thousand new likes, and the Twitter account gained another thousand followers. Comments on Twitter included: ‘Thank you for the constant updates, a job well done’ and ‘fab updates all day, really appreciated’.
“Staff across the Council rose to the challenge of the extreme weather yesterday and worked exceptionally hard to try and keep people safe and get the county moving again. I’m sure the people in the county would join me in thanking them for their valued efforts,” said the Leader of the County Council, Councillor Jamie Adams.
“All in all, it was a very busy day for the employees of Pembrokeshire County Council.”
TV star Anna Ryder Richardson had to be escorted over the M4 Briton Ferry Bridge by police last night while transporting three rare Damara zebra from Colchester to her zoo near Tenby.
The zebras from Colchester will join two zebras already at Anna’s Welsh Zoo – making the herd of five the only herd of zebras in the UK. The zebras will roam in a huge paddock with three Southern White Rhino and two ostrich.

Around 5,000 customers in west Wales are without electricity following Wednesday's storm.
Western Power Distribution said: "We are dealing with 415 incidents and currently have 15,500 customers off supply in South Wales.
"We are aiming to get all customers restored by early evening. We have restored approximately 30,000 customers since yesterday afternoon.
In the West Wales area we have approx. 10,000 customers off supply, approximately 5,000 of those customers are in the Pembrokeshire area.
"Restoration of supplies will take longer because of the huge volume we've had to deal with in such a short space of time, our Control rooms and our field resources have been extremely busy. This event is unprecedented - we haven't seen a storm this fierce in a long time."
