Over £37,500 for over 50 charities and good causes has been raised by Saundersfoot’s New Year’s Day swimmers.

The success of the 30th birthday event - which saw 1,352 people braving the chilly sea - means that nearly £half a million has been raised by the swim over the years.

The 2014 swim’s presentation evening was held at the St Bride’s Sp[a Hote, Saundersfoot on Thrusday.

Amongst the recipients were 10 charities who received at least £1,000.

The highest was £4,750 to Rory’s Fund, set up after Rory Rogers of Saundersfoot was injured in an incident in the village last year. Over 50 of Rory’s family and friends dressed as Red Indians to take to the water to show their support.

There was also £3,000 for the trust fund for little Rudy Cole. Eirwen Cole, who raised £1,400 towards the fund, was presented with the Betty Duncan Cup for the highest-sponsored swimmer.

Presentations were made by Christian Done of main sponsor, Powell’s Cottage Holidays and the chairman of Saundersfoot Community Council, Councillor Huw Morris.

The individual fancy dress award was presented to Mick Booth, who dressed up as Charlie Shivers’ Birthday Breakfast for the swim. The group fancy dress winner was Wogan Guest House, for their mammoth Noah’s Ark effort.

Members of Tenby United Under 14s received a cheque for £500. The team are regular swimmers and have raised over £10,000 over the past five years.

Martyn Williams, chairman of swim organisers, Saundersfoot Festivities, thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the 30th swim, including the emergency services, safety personnel, stewards, bucket collectors and sponsors.
