Pembrokeshire's county council leader should be subject to an annual election, councillors will hear this morning (Monday).
A call to change the constitution so the leader will be elected by a vote at the council’s AGM has been made by East Williamston County councillor Jacob Williams.
The notice of motion will be heard at today's meeting of the Corporate Governance Committee, but Cllr Williams has called for any decision to be made at full council.
In changing the status quo where the leader is elected following a general election of councillors, Cllr Williams said: “No council leader in Wales is directly elected by the public, so leaders should have no claim to a full term in the leadership position for the full length of the council term, just because they were elected by a majority of council following a previous election.”
The Notice of Motion, despite an appeal by Cllr Williams for no recommendation, is recommended to not be adopted.
