A 73-year-old man was made homeless on Monday when his caravan was removed from a field in Haverfordwest.

William Walters is now living in his makeshift home on the lay-by off Freemen's Way. However, the county council has now put a notice on the caravan which means it will have to be moved within seven days.

Mr Walters first moved on to the land at Merlins Bridge last June after becoming homeless in May.

He claims the land is rightfully his and argues that there has been a freezing order in place since 1986 which prevents the sale or construction of buildings on the plot.

He said: "I'm 73-years-old now and I was only in my forties when this whole thing started. I would like to stay local but, because of the hostility I have had over the last 25-years, I will probably have to go to England."

A spokesman for Cofton Land and Property Ltd, which owns the land, said Mr Walters had to be removed because Pembrokeshire County Council gave the company a notice that the land could not be used for residential purposes.

"He turned up on the land but Cofton weren't too bothered because he was on land they weren't using. But the council gave them a notice and they had to set about removing him," the spokesman added.

Mr Walters had previously received an eviction notice, on February 12th, but was served another one on Monday.

Before being removed from the site, Mr Walters said: "What they are doing is completely wrong and illegal.

"I will do whatever is necessary to stop them because as far as they are concerned everything is fair in love and war."
