CALLS have been made to look at ways of improving safety at the town’s Mill Pond following the death of an 18-year-old man in the early hours of last Monday, July 27.

Robert Mansfield, described as a “kind and caring lad” by his family, died in the early hours of Monday after entering the water following his birthday celebrations.

His body was found later that morning by firefighters.

A family statement said: “Rob was a kind and caring lad whom adored his nan, helping her care for his granddad, Tom. He will be missed so much by us and all that knew him.”

Mr Mansfield’s death, not being treated as suspicious, is the third in the Mill Pond this year and has led to renewed calls to look at ways of improving safety in the area.

Concerns about safety at the Mill Pond have previously been raised by the town council.

Pembroke councillor Linda Brown had raised the issue of lighting, and has asked for safety railings on the castle side of the Mill Pond following the death of Wayne Anthony Young on New Year’s Day.

Pembroke Mayor Pauline Waters has also raised the issue of improving safety through better lighting in the area.

However, she felt installing railings may be counterproductive, as children could fall while playing on them.

Speaking after Mr Mansfield’s tragic death, Cllr Brown said that, while the circumstances of his death were not fully known, safety could be improved by preventing anyone entering the water from the bridge.

“I think something should be done so that if someone ever wanted to jump off the bridge there should be something below it. I would vote for some sort of mesh that would catch people if they fell and prevent them from entering the water,” said Cllr Brown.
