A man put his pregnant ex-partner and their six-year-old daughter through a terrifying ordeal when he rammed her car in the centre of the town, a judge heard on Friday.

Mathew Hawkins, aged 30, of Haverfordwest, swerved his Citroen van to end up bumper-to-bumper with the Skoda driven by Sian Jones, which was also carrying their daughter on the back seat.

He then used the van to push the Skoda backwards for 73 feet.

Janet Gedrych, prosecuting, said Miss Jones was so terrified she locked the doors and closed the windows, fearing Hawkins would attack her.

Miss Gedrych said Hawkins drove off but twice witnesses saw him drive past the scene while the police were on their way.

She told Swansea crown court this was the second incident in which Hawkins had terrified Miss Jones.

On February 19th, eight days earlier, Hawkins had called at her home and told her: "I am going to shoot you, and then me."

Hawkins had picked up a wine bottle and threatened to smash it and cut her throat.

Miss Gedrych said the couple had been in a relationship for ten years but recently split up. Now, she said, there was a dispute over the division of property.

Hawkins, a self-employed plumber, of Priory Avenue, admitted dangerous driving and putting Miss Jones in fear of violence.

The judge, Mr Recorder Ian Murphy told Hawkins: "I hope you are ashamed of yourself."

Hawkins was jailed for six months, the sentence suspended for two years, and placed under supervision for two years.

The defendant was also banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to attend a domestic abuse programme.
