THE HISTORIC fort atop Tenby’s St Catherine’s Island is to make its debut as a pop-up cinema next week.

Two screenings of the 1979 Clint Eastwood classic, Escape from Alcatraz, are to be shown in the 19th century building, thanks to the initiative of Rooms With a View.

Part of the Films4Tenby community cinema group, Rooms With a View’s credits include a showing of Jaws at Tenby harbour last summer and The Life of Brian in an old chapel in Saundersfoot.

And there can be no better venue than a building on top of an island for people to watch Escape from Alcatraz, which tells the story of an escape attempt from the infamous island prison in San Francisco Bay. The island and fort have attracted thousands of visitors since they were re-opened, and planning permission has recently been granted for forther tourism-related development on the site.

Said Kath Osborne of Rooms with a View: “Atmospheric experiences are what we set out to achieve, and this is set to be the best yet.”

There will be two showings of the film - on Wednesday September 9 and Thursday September 10. Filmgoers are asked to be on the island by 7pm prompt and are reminded that access to the island is by steep steps only.

There will be a licensed bar and snacks available, and complimentary popcorn.

Tickets are £12.50 from www.roomswithaview.wales or call 01834 843644
