PEMBROKESHIRE County Council has sold off part of a Haverfordwest car park  - a total of 50 spaces - in order for a supermarket to expand.

Discount supermarket Aldi, on Salutation Square is currently undergoing work to increase internal floor space by expanding into Scotchwell car park.

At a meeting in May 2015, the authority’s Cabinet recommended that the land be declared surplus to the Council’s requirements and disposed of on terms to be agreed by the Director of Development.

An Aldi spokesman said: “Work is underway to extend our existing store at Haverfordwest. Our improvements will increase the size of the shop floor and provide additional car parking spaces, giving our customers a better shopping experience.

“We look forward to relaunching the store in the summer, ready to help local residents shop and save in Haverfordwest.”

A Pembrokeshire County Council spokesman said: “The Aldi store is currently expanding and, as part of the expansion, the Council has sold a portion of Scotchwell car park to the supermarket.

“Currently a hording has been erected - for site safety purposes – and it is envisaged that this will be in place for the duration of the works, estimated to be around 12 to 16 weeks.

“Once the Aldi site works have been completed, the hording will be removed and parking bays reinstated.

“There will however be an overall reduction of parking spaces in this car park by approximately 50 bays.”
