HAVERFORDWEST Festival Week came to a successful end on Saturday as the much anticipated soapbox derby raced its way into town.

Held at the upper race course, 17 hand-built gravity-powered machines took to the asphalt in an attempt to race to victory.

The challenging course included jumps, obstacles and even a water hazard which drivers needed to manoeuvre on their way to finish line.

Trophies were awarded to the best dressed cart, best dressed team as well as the fastest cart and fastest team.

Hosted by Haverfordwest Round Table in conjunction with Haverfordwest Town Council and Haverfordwest Rotary Club, the use of the racecourse was by kind permission of the Portfield recreation committee.

Town councillor Jon Collier said: "We are thrilled at how well the event was supported by spectators and competitors. The standard of the carts was simply fantastic, beyond anything we imagined.

"It was a brilliant day, and we look forward to hosting it again next year, maybe even holding races in other towns across the county."
